Twelve cameras were tripped in turn by threads across the track to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground — it does. Degas studied these plates and used them in his own paintings of horses. Silent: no recording technology existed in 1878. The piano heard here is Satie’s first Gymnopédie, composed in 1888, added in the manner of the live accompaniment such sequences were shown with.
